Spring time is getting much closer in Florida, but it’s always best to start preparing your home for the pests that are common during the spring months.
Carpenter Ants – These ants like to burrow in wood and moisture ridden areas. Once it starts to warm up outside, they’ll come out looking for a new home. The last thing you want is a carpenter ant infestation in your home. Check your house for rotting or moisture ridden wood and replace it. Carpenter ants don’t eat wood but they dig and burrow through it.
Bees and Wasps – Flowers, warm weather, sunshine – everything is coming out of hibernation, including bees and wasps. Now, bees won’t necessarily sting you – honey bees just like to make honey but carpenter bees, will burrow holes in your home. Wasps will sting you though. Check the outside of your home, in the eaves, corners, etc for any nests. If you see any, knock them down immediately. Also check trees that are close to your house, with low hanging branches to see if there are any nests.
Spiders – Spiders enjoy spending time in dark, sheltered places, such as porches, garages, basements. In Florida, there are only two species we regularly see that are poisonous – the brown recluse and black widow. If you see those, kill them immediately. However, other species of spiders are more terrifying looking but won’t necessarily harm you. They do like to eat insects so if you can handle one being outside your home, it might not be the worst thing. However, if you have spiders inside your home, definitely take down the webs and clean the area out. You don’t want them taking over your house.
House & Fruit Flies – One of the most annoying pests, the house fly. I’m going to add fruit flies right behind this. House flies, spread diseases – so it is best to take all precautions to get these out of your home. Get a fly swatter and make sure to kill them when you see them. Now, fruit flies are a different breed of fly. These don’t carry disease but they breed like nothing I’ve ever seen. One day you’ve got 1 pesky fruit fly, two days later there are 100 of them. The best way to kill these off is to take out your trash regularly, throw out any fruit that is rotting, and clean out your drains with bleach.
Fleas – Fleas usually only get in your home via your pet. Your cute little dog or cat are basically flea carriers, so make sure to invest in good flea medicine if your dog or cat go outdoors. Also give them regular baths and treatments. Check them for fleas as often as is feasible for you. Fleas are a tough pest to get rid of, best to call us if you are starting to see fleas in your home. Don’t let it continue to grow, get rid of it quickly.
